FEELING LIKE SUMMER ON 1ST DAY OF FLL Happy First Day of Fall, South Florida!Hopefully everyone had a great week!  Daily thunderstorms earlier this week grew very old, very quickly for South Florida. But by the end of the week, the forecast showed Tropical Storm Ophelia moving closer to North Carolina while funneling in drier air towards South Florida. And that’s exactly what happened! We enjoyed a beautiful Friday with plenty of sunshine and near average temperatures. But then late in the day, just past evening, thunderstorms began to develop and drift across South Florida and they lingered all night long. And that’s how we started the morning off today.  Rumbles of thunder likely woke up many as thunderstorms developed along our coastal areas and covered the Florida Keys.Tropical storm Ophelia made landfall near Emerald Isle, North Carolina early this morning and will move farther away from South Florida. As Ophelia lifts northward, it will be pulling a stalled front (that is sitting just off of our coastline) northwa...

MBTA auditing buses after driver safety mics failed at high rates, emails say The MBTA is in the process of auditing its fleet of buses after a review of 30 across three garages found issues with emergency communication equipment, including a covert microphone drivers can use to talk to dispatchers, according to internal emails obtained by the Herald. The emails show top safety officials acknowledging the issue this week, coming up with a workaround for the covert microphone problem, pledging to continue auditing a sample of buses this weekend before turning to a larger fleetwide review next week, and saying they communicated the issue with dispatchers.Deputy Chief Safety Officer Dennis Lytton told MBTA officials about the emergency communication equipment failure rates on the 30 buses in a Friday email that mentioned the covert microphones and other safety features like an interior camera.“Besides a much larger audit of the fleet as a first step, I think there needs to be a discussion about how we communicate this to bus operators, bus dispatchers, and others...

Why you might want to wait to get the new COVID booster

Why you might want to wait to get the new COVID booster (NEXSTAR) – An updated COVID-19 vaccine has arrived, but it may be too late to do anything to turn the tide on the months-long summer surge we've seen in cases, hospitalizations and deaths. If you're one of the many, many people who has come down with the virus in recent weeks, do you really need to rush out to get another immunity boost? At the very least, you should wait until you're feeling better and out of your isolation period before you get a vaccine dose, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises. But you may want to consider waiting even longer, the CDC acknowledges. Because you get some natural immunity from a recent infection, waiting up to 3 months to get a booster shot could "extend that protection out by delaying," explained Dr. Jeffrey Duchin, health officer in Seattle and King County, in a recent briefing on updated vaccinations. Who shouldn’t get the new COVID booster? "Everyone needs to look at their own personal situation," said Duchin. Someone ...

Soucheray: Like a moth to a flame, like a squirrel to a squirrel-proof feeder, I’m drawn …

Soucheray: Like a moth to a flame, like a squirrel to a squirrel-proof feeder, I’m drawn … My horrible summer compulsion began with the “weight-activated squirrel-proof” bird feeder, advertised on social media in videos of spinning squirrels thwarted in their endless pursuit of bird food. Imagine a small child, uninjured, flung off a spinning tilt-a-whirl.Joe SoucherayThe sales pitch shows an outdoorsy homeowner in L.L. Bean flannel installing a tall, sturdy cylindrical feeder with a round, wire platform on which the birds perch. Ah, but if a squirrel grabs the same wire, it spins wildly — weight activated! — and the squirrel flings off into the bushes or onto the ground. This looked like colossal fun. I ordered immediately. Two feeders hang outside the window of what passes for my office. I have immensely enjoyed watching the feeding birds only to have the birds frightened away by marauding squirrels who grab onto the feeder inelegantly and devour its contents. Now, thanks to some genius, I had the solution on order. With excitement normally reserved for ...

Cleaning up the city’s mess is downright criminal in San Jose

Published Fri, 01 Nov 2024 00:33:56 GMT

Cleaning up the city’s mess is downright criminal in San Jose The old saying that “No good deed goes unpunished” was on full display in San Jose this week when city officials suggested that fines might be in order involving the historic but dilapidated First Church of Christ, Scientist building overlooking St. James Park. Not just for property owner Z&L Properties, which allowed the site to become blighted, but for Garden City Construction’s Jim Salata — whose crews removed the tarp and boarded up open windows last month.City Councilmember Omar Torres says city staff told him Salata’s team trespassed to do the work and that while Salata was well-intentioned “a crime is a crime.”Madness! This is real “Alice in Wonderland” stuff, and — based on the responses on neighborhood email lists, letters to the Mercury News and social media posts — a lot of people think so, too. Jon Ball, a retired construction executive who has lived in San Jose for nearly 30 years, wrote an email to t...
